The International Workshop on Resilience in Public Health: Challenges and Perspectives will center on the critical topic of defining and applying resilience within public and universal health systems. This event, organized by the Technology, Information, and Resilience in Public Health Lab (ResiliSUS) at Center for Strategic Studies of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (CEE-Fiocruz), is scheduled for December 9th, 2024, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The workshop will be held online from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (BRT) and streamed via Fiocruz’s official YouTube channel. It will feature a distinguished panel of international experts, including Victoria Haldane (University of Toronto, Canada), Ann Sophie Jung (University of Leeds, UK), and Connie Junhghans-Minton (Imperial College London, UK). ResiliSUS coordinator Alessandro Jatobá will also deliver a presentation.
“Our focus is to explore ways to operationalize resilience in public health amidst escalating challenges and risks to universal health systems like Brazil’s SUS. These challenges include constrained economic resources, emerging diseases, and the climate crisis, which intensify demands on health systems,” explains Jatobá.
The workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners from diverse backgrounds to foster dialogue on resilience in health systems, particularly those with characteristics akin to the SUS. “We hope to create a systematic approach to discussing health systems resilience and develop actionable strategies to strengthen them,” adds Paula de Castro-Nunes, ResiliSUS researcher and event organizer.
Beyond the presentations, the workshop seeks to lay the groundwork for an international research network dedicated to health systems resilience. “This forum is an opportunity to unify diverse perspectives, reach consensus, and propose practical recommendations to mitigate risks threatening health systems worldwide,” notes Paulo Victor Rodrigues de Carvalho, researcher at ResiliSUS/CEE.
This event promises to be platform for advancing the resilience agenda in public health, addressing both theoretical foundations and actionable policies to strengthen universal health systems in an increasingly complex global health landscape.
